Details About the Fluzone Quadrivalent Vaccine

What is the Fluzone Quadrivalent vaccine? It is an inactivated quadrivalent influenza virus vaccine indicated for the prevention of influenza disease caused by influenza subtype A and type B viruses contained in the vaccine.

Here are a few facts you should know about the Fluzone Quarivalent vaccine:

The Fluzone Quarivalent vaccine is the first and only cell culture-based flu vaccine in the US to help offer protection against 4 flu virus strains for people aged 4 years and older.
The vaccine can be used for anyone as young as 6 months all the way up to anyone through the age of 64 (all persons 65 years of age and over will be given the High-Dose Fluzone Quadrivalent vaccine).
The vaccine has a 4-strain protection that helps protect patients 6 months and older.
Covered by most health plans and Medicare Part B (we recommend verifying coverage with your insurance carrier).
First FDA-approved flu vaccine to use cells, instead of chicken eggs.
Trivalent vaccine protects against two influenza A viruses (H1N1 and H3N2) and one influenza B virus while the Quadrivalent vaccine, in addition, protects against antigens for an extra influenza B virus (two total)*.

What is the Flublok vaccine? It is a trivalent influenza vaccine that has been FDA approved for use in adults 18 years and older.

Here are a few facts you should know about the Flublok vaccine:

Flublok does not use the influenza virus or chicken eggs in its manufacturing process.
This vaccine is suitable for vaccinating people with egg allergies because it is not made using eggs.
Trivalent vaccine protects against two influenza A viruses (H1N1 and H3N2) and one influenza B virus.
It has a slightly shorter shelf life than most other currently available injectable influenza vaccines; it expires 9 months from the production date.

Details About the Fluzone High-Dose Vaccine

What is the Fluzone High-Dose vaccine? It is an influenza vaccine, manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur Inc., designed specifically for people 65 years and older.

Here are a few facts you should know about the Fluzone High-Dose vaccine:

Fluzone High-Dose vaccine contains four times the amount of antigen (the part of the vaccine that prompts the body to make antibody) contained in regular flu shots.
A higher dose of antigen in the vaccine is supposed to give older people a better immune response, and therefore, better protection against flu.
The intradermal shot uses a much smaller needle than the regular flu shot, and it requires less antigen to be as effective as the regular flu shot.
It is a shot that is injected into the skin instead of the muscle.
