Every parent has great concern regarding the process of any office providing care for their children. In this article we answer some of the most commonly asked questions related to pediatric services at Warner Family Practice.

What common childhood illnesses do you treat?

Even though we live in Arizona, we see many cases of influenza (the flu). Babies as young as six months can receive a flu vaccine, and we recommend it for all kids, six months of age and older. Ear infections and strep throat are very common childhood illnesses; both are very treatable.

If you have kids, you have accidents. Children like to climb, and what goes up must come down. We see fractures from falls, as well as cuts and abrasions. Our providers suture cuts and put casts on fractures. All the treatments you expect from a pediatrician you will find through our team of doctors and medical staff.

Do you offer Allergy & Asthma treatments?

Children at any age can have allergies. As an adult, you know how uncomfortable the symptoms can be – they can make your life miserable. Allergies have the same impact on children. No parent or doctor wants to see see a children suffer and we work with parents to prescribe treatments that are best for the child in their current symptoms as well as help plan for the future. Children as young as one-year-old with allergies can be treated with over-the-counter medications and if necessary, prescription medication.

We also treat a lot of children with asthma. With the appropriate diagnosis and treatment, the quality of life improves immensely. Proper treatment helps physical activity and self-esteem. We also do lung function testing to make sure medications are working properly.

What if my child has ADD & ADHD?

Parents usually approach a health care provider saying, “I think my child has ADHD.” It’s a difficult conversation but an imperative one for the sake of your child. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, ADHD for short, is one of the most common childhood disorders. In ADD, or what is called in the diagnostic manual, ADHD, inattentive subtype, the symptom of hyperactivity is absent. There are an estimated 6.4 million diagnosed children in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

ADHD is one of the most over-diagnosed and under-diagnosed childhood disorder. Before making a diagnosis, a formal evaluation is performed to determine if your child has this disorder. The evaluation includes parents, teachers, school counselors and a psychologist working together to test and evaluate your child. If your child is diagnosed with ADHD, we can determine the best treatment plan, put it into action and help you manage your child’s treatment.

Do you do Sports Physicals?

Yes, we do! We are happy to work with young athletes so they can be the best possible athlete they can be. A head-to-toe physical exam is performed, including a urine test. Our providers also check blood sugar and cholesterol with a simple finger prick. One objective of these physicals is to detect underlying cardiovascular abnormalities. Warner Family Practice uses standard family medical history questions and examination techniques. The health of our young patients is very important to us.

My child has special needs. Will you treat them?

Children are as diverse as their parents with unique personalities, bodies and needs – and we love working with each one of them. We work with parents to determine if their child is hitting developmental markers. In some cases, it may be necessary to refer a child to a specialist, depending on what they need, such as speech or occupational therapy.

When necessary, we order tests that are medically appropriate based upon recommended health guidelines. Unfortunately, insurance companies aren’t necessarily on board with comprehensive testing, despite it being in a child’s best interest. If there is ever a question regarding cost and coverage related to special needs testing the best thing to do, is call your insurance company. They will discuss with you what they will pay for and what you may be responsible for. This is one way to avoid surprises later.
