Back in November the Buffalo Bills vs New York Jets game was threatened by a massive snowfall in the Buffalo area. As a matter of fact, much of the US received an unexpected rise in low temperatures. The weather was so bad that the game was postponed until the following evening when the teams met up in Detroit, Michigan. For those of you who are football fans you know that the Bills beat the Jets 38-3.

Events like this let us know that the cold has arrived and while it looks different for Arizona than it does the rest of the country there is one common myth about the cold that you need to know about.

Most people assume that cold weather creates a greater susceptibility to catching the flu. While it’s true that when it gets cold, people come down with the flu that’s where the connection ends.

Flu season runs parallel to the cold season so it’s natural to connect the two. This myth leads individuals in warmer climates (such as Florida or Arizona) to pass on flu vaccine. The belief that warmer temperatures suppress the flu is not factual. During flu season (October through May) anyone is a possible candidate to carry the flu virus.

So as the weather gets colder and colder, and football games get snowier and snowier (like these from last year), you now know that the people sitting in the stands in New York have the same probability of catching the flu as we do in Arizona.

Something that has long been a high priority for Warner Family Practice is our desire to provide as many relevant health services to our patients in one central location.

We have flu vaccines available and ready for anyone who has yet to get their shot this year. No need to schedule an appointment. Walk in at your convenience during normal business hours and within 15 minutes we will have you all set and ready to go. We’ll even let you pick your favorite bandage!

It’s our pleasure to continue to serve you and keep you informed during every season of your health.
