For many of us, there just isn’t enough time in the day to do everything we need to do, much less what we want to do. If you’re a parent, this especially rings true. There is so much demanded of you that your “me-time” is relegated to the end of your day.

So that’s what we do, we wait till the very end of our day, then spend that quiet time to read a book, catch up on Facebook, visit Pinterest for party planning ideas or catch up on our favorite TV show.

While there’s nothing inherently wrong with this, you may be reaping unintended consequences when there is no consistency to your evening activities and schedule.

Your body loves, and in fact craves, routine. It thrives when it experiences regularly spaced eating times, sleeping cycles and a relatively routine work schedule.

It’s not always easy to discipline yourself to go to bed at the same time every night, but when you realize how far-reaching the effects of sleep deprivation are, you just may change your priorities.

You are not alone in this journey. You may feel like your sleep issues are unique and no one else struggles with them. You need to know that this is not the case; many of the symptoms you experience have solutions you can implement, one by one.

Perhaps you know that you’re not alone, but you’ve bought into the belief that making changes would require time, money or effort that you simply don’t have. You’ve convinced yourself that this is just your lot in life – this is not true.

When health professionals meet with people just like you, there is a clear fear that any changes made will be sweeping, drastic and numerous. On the contrary, when you spend time with a caring provider, you should identify the ONE SINGLE CHANGE that will be catalytic to discovering what others have long-called a “good night’s rest.”

The more you make your need known and confide in your provider the more room there is for hope. Hope for something different. Hope for a change to something that has kept you bound up. Hope that you can be a better version of you – for your family, your friends, your employer and for yourself.

Right now, in this moment, you have the steering wheel. Which way will you go?
